Southfield Public Schools announces major high school redesign


Carolyn Shields, dean of Wayne State’s College of Education, and Southfield Public Schools Superintendent Wanda Cook-Robinson joined Craig Fahle to discuss changes taking place in the Southfield Public School system, including separate-gender classes and more. The suburban school district is partnering with Wayne State University to bring about needed changes to address the school's social, emotional and environmental issues whereby attempting to improve performance. Changes include: Eight grade academies - teaching and helping adolescents transition into high school. Gender classes – separating the boys from the girls in core classes: Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. Ninth grade house – More counseling for freshman and their own set of teachers.
