Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the M-1 light rail street car group "has done everything I asked them do" and said he would make a "very significant" announcement on Friday. LaHood and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder are expected at Wayne State University Friday morning to announce about $25 million in federal funding for the 3.3 mile project up Woodward Avenue connecting downtown and midtown Detroit. Last month, the Legislature approved legislation establishing a regional transit authority for Metro Detroit. The revised M-1 system was scaled back and will have 11 stops and six streetcars over 3.3 miles and run 117 weekday trips each way from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A streetcar would travel about 12 mph and take roughly 16 minutes to make a one-way trip. Streetcars would run every 71/2 minutes from Congress north to Grand Boulevard at peak times and every 12 minutes at other times.
