WJR’s Paul W. Smith conducted a live roundtable interview with the presidents of Michigan’s big three research universities during Day 2 of the Mackinac Policy Conference. Wayne State University President Allan Gilmour commented about the importance of the University Research Corridor institutions’ role in automotive research. He pointed out that about $300 million of auto-focused research has been conducted during the last five years – about $60 million annually – and that 28 percent of the research funding was provided by the auto industry. Normally industries would provide about 3 percent of the research money for industry-focused research.
