Fifty National Football League (NFL) veterans will participate in a locally-based study to investigate the long-term impact of playing football on the brain. The study will be led by Randall Benson, M.D., medical director of the Novi, MI-based Center for Neurological Studies, and E. Mark Haacke, Ph.D, a radiology and biomedical engineering researcher at Detroit Medical Center (DMC). The DMC is conducting the research in conjunction with Wayne State University’s Traumatic Brain Injury Program. The study comes on the heels of several suicides among former NFL players thought to be linked to the lasting effects of head injuries. A number of class action lawsuits have been filed against the NFL by former players, seeking compensation for brain injury reportedly caused by the sport.
