More than 100 Detroit residents will be participating in a series of workshops called CitizenDetroit being launched Thursday at the International Institute at Kirby and John R. Armed with an actual budget to work through, money to save or spend and assigned roles such as mayor, participants will be asked to make the same tough choices as elected officials. The CitizenDetroit initiative was created by former City Councilwoman Sheila Cockrel and former Wayne State University President Irvin D. Reid. It is being launched by the Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society program to better educate citizens on Detroit's economic challenges and fiscal realities. Reid, who served on Gov. Rick Snyder's financial review team for Detroit, said it is important to focus first on "highly motivated" citizens who vote regularly. "These are not just people who sit on the sidelines and complain about things not happening," he said. "These are people who may have those same problems, but they vote, so they are highly motivated to participate in democracy."
