Wayne State introduces 30% tuition cut for 2015 spring and summer semestersJuly 31, 2014
DETROIT—Wayne State University has announced a tuition discount program that cuts undergraduate tuition by 30 percent for the 2015 spring and summer semester courses. To be eligible for the Spring/Summer Tuition Break program, students must complete a total of 24 credits during the fall 2014 and winter 2015 semesters and carry a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
University officials developed the program to deliver direct tuition savings to students while encouraging faster degree completion. Eligibility requirements were designed to both include and support many in WSU’s diverse student body — 80 percent of whom rely on financial assistance.
“The Spring/Summer Tuition Break is intended to serve as motivation for the students out there who might be deciding between nine or 12 credits this fall,” said Margaret E. Winters, Wayne State’s Provost. “We are hopeful that this will create some urgency for them to add that extra class now and progress toward their degrees in the most cost-effective way possible.”
Approved by the Wayne State Board of Governors on June 27, the program aims to help students speed up their progress toward earning a degree while also mitigating tuition costs. The program comes at a time when it is more important than ever for students to complete their degrees as soon as possible and begin their careers.
"We care deeply about keeping the cost of a college education affordable for our students and their families,” said chair of the Wayne State University Board of Governors Debbie Dingell. “This program helps with that, while also encouraging students who are able to attend full time shorten their time to degree completion. That helps the student, the community and the economy."
