Professor Sally Roberts to receive 2014 Woman of Distinction Award

June 9, 2014

Sally Roberts, assistant professor of mathematics education and director of the GO-GIRL (Gaining Options: Girls Investigate Real Life) program, has been named the 2014 Woman of Distinction Award recipient.

Roberts is a Grosse Pointe Woods resident.

The award will be presented as part of the Wayne State University chapter of the MI ACE Network during a noon luncheon on Monday, June 16 at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center.

“I am truly honored to receive this year’s Woman of Distinction award. It is like icing on the cake,” said Roberts. “Women leaders have a responsibility to see the potential in other women and make connections that will move them forward. The most rewarding accomplishment in my career is being able to call on my experience and my connections to support other women as they navigate both personal and professional challenges on their path to becoming tomorrow’s leaders.”

Roberts, a clinical faculty member in the College of Education’s Teacher Education Division, has made several significant contributions to the university during her two decades of service.

She is most known for her years of effort as co-founder of the nationally recognized GO-GIRL program. Since 2001, GO-GIRL has introduced more than 900 seventh-grade girls (at no charge to them) into the possibilities of STEM education and careers in a remarkable program that also fosters academic success and college ambition in at-risk teens.

To support this program, Roberts and other collaborators have secured more than $3 million in funding and cultivated a large donor network. GO-GIRL also has been replicated at five sister institutions.

“Sally has a wealth of relationships across and outside the campus,” said Monica Brockmeyer, associate professor of computer science and associate provost for student success. “She brings people together expertly in ways that advance their own careers, while building momentum for broad engagement and opportunity in STEM for community outreach and academic opportunity for the broadest possible spectrum of society.”
