Wayne State and Blackstone LaunchPad host Spotlight Detroit, Feb. 21

February 11, 2014

Event to be held during Detroit Week, a celebration of entrepreneurship and innovation

Wayne State University and Blackstone LaunchPad will host Spotlight Detroit, an event celebrating entrepreneurship in Detroit, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21 at the College of Engineering. The event, scheduled during Detroit Week, will include a keynote address from WSU alumnus Steve Plochocki, and an exhibition of more than 15 local businesses, including TechTown Detroit, Bamboo Detroit and many others. Attendees can take part in a scavenger hunt for prizes and enjoy a variety of refreshments.

“Wayne State University is committed to fostering an environment where students and staff can explore starting small businesses and learn how to sustain their ventures through entrepreneurial tools, resources and encouragement of innovation,” said Aubrey Agee, senior program administrator for Blackstone LaunchPad. “This event is an opportunity to showcase the entrepreneurial success of our esteemed alumni and the student startups affiliated with Blackstone LaunchPad.”

Plochocki serves as president, CEO and member of the board of directors for Quality Systems Inc., a developer and marketer of computer-based practice management, electronic health records and revenue cycle management applications, as well as connectivity products and services for medical and dental group practices and small hospitals.

Spotlight Detroit is sponsored by Wayne State University’s Blackstone LaunchPad, College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, School of Business Administration, College of Engineering, the Graduate School and the Office of Economic Development as well as the Coleman Foundation.

The College of Engineering is located at 5050 Anthony Wayne Drive, Detroit. For more information, visit blackstonelaunchpad.wayne.edu

Funded by the New Economy Initiative of Southeast Michigan and the  Blackstone Charitable Foundation the Blackstone LaunchPad opened in September 2010 offering career guidance, resources and advice to entrepreneurs, innovators and inventors at Wayne State University. Their primary mission is to show Wayne State University students that starting a new venture is a legitimate career path and attainable reality. The secondary mission is to encourage every Wayne State University student who wants to start a new venture — either for profit or not for profit — to do so in Metro Detroit and thereby contribute to the economic and social growth of our region.
