Human rights expert to speak Feb. 12 in free lecture at Wayne LawFebruary 3, 2014
DETROIT – Author and human rights expert Carrie Booth Walling will speak Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Wayne State University Law School on “The Security Council and Syria: The Case for Humanitarian Intervention.”
The lecture, sponsored by Wayne Law’s Program for International Law Studies, is free and open to the public with lunch provided. It will take place from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org. Parking will be available for $6.50 in Structure One across West Palmer Street from Wayne Law.
Walling is an assistant professor of political science at Albion College, where she teaches courses on international politics and human rights. She is author of the 2013 book All Necessary Measures: The United Nations and Humanitarian Intervention, Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
Her research focuses on international responses to mass atrocity crimes and how human rights norms are reshaping the meaning of state sovereignty at the United Nations. Responses she studies include military humanitarian intervention and human rights trials.
Walling, with Professor Susan Waltz of the University of Michigan, also has launched a new website – www.humanrightshistory.umich.edu – on human rights advocacy and the history of international human rights standards.
Walling earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from the James Madison College at Michigan State University. She earned her master’s degree in strategic studies and political science from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the University of Minnesota. Her doctorate in political science with a minor in human rights is from the University of Minnesota. She was a post-doctoral fellow with the Michigan Society of Fellows at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at U of M from 2008-11.
She has published articles on ethnic cleansing, humanitarian intervention and international human rights trials in the Journal of Peace Research, International Journal of Human rights and Civil Wars and New Global Studies.
