Wayne State University students earn state service awards

DETROIT, MICH. — The Wayne State University Dean of Students Office honored 14 WSU student winners of the 2006 Michigan Campus Compact Outstanding Service Awards.

The awards were presented to students in institutions of higher education who have demonstrated dedication throughout their educational careers to learning from and giving back to their communities through service. All of the award winners throughout the state were honored at a brunch celebration on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing, Michigan.

Honored for the Heart and Soul Award, which commends students for their time, effort and personal commitment to their communities through service were Elizabeth Ajayi, Melissa Bailey, LaSalle, Ontario, Canada; Angela Bolden, Pontiac; Shante Boozer, Troy, Prabha Dhanapal, Sterling Heights, Samar Fawaz, Dearborn Heights; Ralph Luis, Oak Park; Pollie Jackson, Detroit; Brandy Johnson, Woodhaven; Christina Kassab, Southfield; Mandeep Shergill, Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Sarah Kubik, Noora Mothana, Dearborn; Maria Ramos, Detroit; Jason Rashaad, Detroit; Jessica Rivait, Berkley; and Rita Sol, Bloomfield Hills.

Johnson of Woodhaven was also honored for the Commitment to Service Award, which recognizes one student per MCC member campus for multiple contributions to their institution and community through community service involvement:

Shergill of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was also honored for the Outstanding Community Impact Award, which recognizes five students in the state who have made service an integral part of their college experience through their significant contribution to community resources. Mandeep received $200 to donate to the service organization of her choice.

“We are proud of all of our students’ accomplishments in service to the Detroit community as part of our university’s mission,” said David Strauss, WSU Dean of Students Office.
